RHUMC Vision Statement

"The Richmond Hill United Methodist Church is a Jesus centered community, driven and shaped in its movement into the world by Spirit-given gifts for Ministry"

History of Richmond Hill UMC

During the WWII era, Bryan County was split by the federal government in order to establish Camp Stewart, now called Ft. Stewart. The residents of three towns were forced to move off of the land that would become Camp Stewart. Many of these residents moved to Richmond Hill which, back then, was just a small community known as Ways Station. Ways Station was the winter home of industrialist Henry Ford and his wife, Clara. They spent many winters at their Richmond Hill plantation.

The Methodist families who had moved to Richmond Hill from the town of Clyde Georgia requested assistance from the Georgia Methodist conference to build a Methodist church. Plans were approved in 1942 and Rev. P.T. Holloway was appointed as the first pastor. Some time later, the congregation gratefully accepted an offer by the newly built Baptist Church to temporarily hold services in their sanctuary on the second and fourth Sundays until a church building could be built.

At the end of WWII, a serious effort began to construct a Methodist Church building. Mr. and Mrs. James W. Gill donated land and Albert Deluge drew up the plans for a 100-seat sanctuary with 4 Sunday School rooms. Billy Speir and Jimmy Brogdon's company, Speir and Brogdon, built the church with lumber donated by the Richmond Hill Plantation saw mill. The altar furnishings were custom fabricated by area craftsmen at the Industrial Arts & Trade School, which was also a part of Mr. Ford's plantation. The bell for the steeple came from the former church in Clyde.

On March 9, 1947, our first church service was held at Richmond Hill United Methdist Church in the Clyde Chapel. In the 1980's the community and RHUMC grew rapidly. It became apparent that a larger sanctuary was needed. After ground breaking in 1985, the present sanctuary was completed and the first service held on December 14th, 1986.
